Verb Tense- showing the time of an action of a condition.

English has six verb tenses: present, past, future, present perfect, past perfect, and future perfect.

Consistency of Tenses - using the same tense to describe actions occurring at the same time.

*Do not shift tenses unless the meaning of your paragraph requires you to do so.

    Example:

Incorrect- I wrote my essay and then revise it.
Correct- I wrote my essay and then revised it.

Common Error- Writers often start in one tense and then switch to another without realizing that it is not in sequential order.

The reader must understand when the action is taking place and that it is consistent. If the time frame changes the reader gets confused.

    Errors from essay:

Her name was Rukmani. The “was” implies that her name changed.
Her name is Rukmani. Her name did not change.

The officials took rights away from women and starts to make things up.

  2. 1.Concept:
Verb tense shows the time of an action or a condition by a subject.

    Six Types:
    Past
    Past Perfect
    Present
    Present Perfect
    Future
    Future Perfect

    2.Purpose in writing clearly:
Verb tense makes the subject and action agree with the timing. If the action doesn't agree with the verb tense, it can confuse the reader of the time period (past, present, future, etc.)

    3. When used incorrectly:
A verb tense is used incorrectly when it does not agree with action. If the verb tense is Past-Present, the action needs to be in Past-Present as well. If the verb tense is different then the action, the paragraph or sentence is not clear.

    4. Common Error:
-Being inconsistant with the verb tense within the paragraph

    5.`Examples of errors from essay:
