    COMMAS:
    • Commas are used in writing to separate lists, except for the last adjective. An adjective is a word that describes a noun.
E.g. the shirt came in red, blue, green, and white.
    • Commas can be used to separate words that come before the noun. A noun is the object doing the action.
E.g. the fluffy, fat bird flew away.
    • Commas can also be used when introducing an opinion.
E.g. In my opinion, the food was terrible!
    • Commas are used when directly speaking to someone.
E.g. let’s go to the party, Patrick.
    • Commas can be used when there is extra information that DOES NOT affects the idea of the original sentence.
E.g. Mr. Jones, the farmer, would tie a rock around the neck of the dog and throw them in the river to drown to death.
    • Commas are used when stating three or more short complete thoughts in a series.
E.g. Ira was attached to him, she looked after her younger brother Kuti, and she cared for him.
NOTE: SOMETIMES to check comma usage replace the comma with “and”. If it doesn’t fit the sentence don’t use the comma.
DON’T: He wore a bright and red shirt.
DO: He wore a bright red shirt. (No comma)
ORIGINAL: The dog had long, soft fur.
DO: The dog had long and soft fur.
