ReplyDelete1.Active and Passive voice tells the reader if the subject is either performing the action or receiving the action.
Active Voice - Person performs the action.
Passive Voice – Person receives the action.
2. Why use active voice most of the time:
Active voice is more clear and simple than passive.
When to use passive voice:
Passive voice when to put special attention and importance (emphasize) to receiver of the action.
3. When passive voice is used incorrectly, the reader might get confused. When people use passive voice in their writing, they tend to emphasize the receiver by giving it more attention than necessary. This is why writers should use active voice more often to be more straight forward and clear.
4. The common errors are that people uses passive voice in their writing when they don’t really need to. It is unnecessary.
5. Examples:
(Example 1)
Passive Voice:
As imperialism is going on in her town, Rukmani’s family begins to suffer and her land is sold.
Why this is incorrect: “…imperialism is going on in her town” is too wordy.
Active Voice:
Rukmani’s family suffers and her land is sold because of imperialism.
Why this is correct: The sentence has the same meaning but is less wordy and straight forward.
(Example 2)
Passive Voice:
She decided to have Nick help her.
Why this is incorrect: “decided to have” is too wordy as well.
Active Voice:
She asked Nick to help her.
Why this is correct: This sentence is more direct.
