1.Apostrophes are used to show possession. Depending on the noun, the placement of the apostrophes varies. Apostrophes are also used to replace letters in a contraction.
ReplyDelete2.The purpose of apostrophes is to show possession and to form contractions. It makes writing clearer. Without apostrophes, it would be difficult to show possession in writing and there would be no contractions, meaning that words like won’t would have to be written as would not.
3.When apostrophes are used incorrectly, confusion ensues. Writing in general wouldn’t be as concise. Writing wouldn’t be specific either. If a sentence is talking about a specific cat, but it read “the cats tail,” it would be impossible to tell which cat it was referring to. If the sentence read “the cat’s tail,” we know that it is in reference to one cat.
4.Common errors are usually found in conjunctions. It is usually a silly little mistake, like someone forgetting to add the apostrophe in won’t or don’t or something of that sort.
5.Examples:
Conjunction and Possessive misuse
Being guilty by Petliers terms isnt the same as being guilty of a crime, but just for actions in general.
The correct way to write the sentence would have been: Being guilty by Petlier’s terms isn’t the same as being guilty of a crime, but just for actions in general.
Plural Nouns ending in s
The dogs’s ball is brown.
The correct way to use an apostrophe on a word that is plural would be to just add an apostrophe, after the final s in the word instead of another s: The dogs’ ball is brown.

-Mr. Jones’s
Examples of errors from our essays:
ReplyDelete1. The handmaid’s are given the color red.
-This sentence is wrong because an apostrophe is used when no possession is included in the sentence. The apostrophe shouldn’t be in the sentence.
Correction: The handmaids are given the color red.
2. Mr. Jones’ farm was taken over by animals.
-The apostrophe used in this sentence is wrong because (s’) is supposed to be used when dealing with a noun that is possessive and plural. For example: The boys’ dog. This example shows how many boys have one dog.
Correction: Mr. Jones’s farm was taken over by animals.
-The (’s) is used because Mr. Jones is one person and the farm belongs to him.
