ReplyDelete1. A semicolon could replace a comma in a sentence that already contains numerous commas.
2. Its purpose in writing clearly is to seperate related independent clauses to one another.
3. When semicolons are used improperly they would join two unrelated ideas, which would confuse the reader.
4. Common errors come when a writer uses a semicolon to separate two different ideas, that seem similar.
5. Example 1: Napoleon was intially innocent however he became guilty with power.
Correction 1: Napoleon was intially innocent; he became guilty with power.
6. For example 1 we seperated the two independant clauses by replacing "however" with a ";". The "however" unites both parts of the sentence like the semicolon.
